While the Network sees itself as an important collective "voice of the community," it is up to individual citizens -- communicating as individuals -- to add their voices to the chorus pressing for responsibility and accountability in city government agencies and improvement in the quality of life in the Conejo Valley.

Individuals make the ultimate difference.  Politicians do pay attention to citizen phone calls, statements and opinions offered during the public comment portion of weekly City Council meetings and the op-ed and letters to the editor pages of all four local newspapers.

Citizens can say a lot, even in a three-minute: "sound bite" at Council meetings or the 350-word limit generally imposed on letters to the editors. If the field -- verbal and printed --is left to the opposing view, citizens have no one to blame but themselves!

A few key reminders will make the effort easier:

Be dedicated to the position you are taking.

bulletBe well-informed on the subject, but understand that the audiences you are addressing may not have your knowledge.
bulletEmphasize just a few important points. You can always speak or write again.
bulletKeep it simple and in every day language. Do not use legal or government words.
bulletRehearse, rewrite and edit.
bulletIf you must work from notes while speaking, look up at your audience as often as possible.
bulletBe forceful in your comments, but not so emotional that you get tangled up in the words.
bulletSpeak slowly, loudly and clearly. And do not be cute or flip in your comments.
